In 2013 Dr. Kao started Practical Horse Genetics. The aim of PHG has always been to offer genetic testing on horses to anyone who wants it. The lab is run like she would want a lab run if it were testing her own pets: with care, respect, and an emphasis on getting the right result no matter how much work it takes. PHG also tries to minimise the genetics jargon to help all horse owners understand their results.
